WHO WE ARE:

The art of cinema is nothing if not the result of ceaseless experimentation with technology, language, form, and new subjectivities. ExFM welcomes scholars and students interested in all forms of experimental film and media, including avant-garde and experimental film, video art, moving image installation, and other forms of independent and artisanal moving image and sound practice, and how they extend our understanding of the limits of cinema and allied moving image and sound media.

ExFM aims to builds bridges between scholars, artists, and activists in the visual, sound, and performing arts, and in branches of cultural studies, theory, and new media. ExFM is where internationally and institutionally diverse scholars interested in experimental film and media can meet one another, share ideas and resources, and work together.

MISSION:

The mission of the group consists of two broad objectives:

1) To provide a forum in which scholars of experimental film and media can discuss their work, organize panels and workshops for each year's SCMS conference, and work together to accomplish the goals and objectives of the group

2) To schedule a yearly meeting at the SCMS conference where we can gather to formulate more specific programs and plans

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

1) To work with the SCMS Executive Committee and each year's Conference Program Committee as a source of expertise concerning experimental film and media

2) To support Cinema Journal and other publications and to encourage their inclusion of scholarship about experimental film and media

3) To work with other SCMS groups, particularly those representing historical and international cinemas, to consider issues regarding preservation of and access to materials

4) To take on special projects, such as specially designated panels, joint conferences, plenary participation, or workshops

5) To use this SCMS ExFM website as a resource portal and the group forum to facilitate communication and dialogue for scholars in the field
