We find ourselves in a phase of rapid urbanization globally, and urban studies has emerged as point of interest in a number of disciplines. Because of the proliferation of media platforms, scholars in a number of other disciplines have turned their interest to visual and other media. As the premiere society for cinema and media studies professionals on the international scene, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies should play a central role in bringing together scholars working on the relationship between media and the urban environment. The Urban Studies Scholarly Interest Group works to further this aim.
