Summary

Space has played a pivotal role in visual, media, and cultural studies, redirecting emphasis away from temporality and teleology in what some have deemed the "spatial turn.” Drawing upon sources as diverse as Benjamin, Bhabha, Certeau, Deleuze, Foucault, Harvey, Jameson, Kracauer, Lefebvre, Leibniz, and Soja, the casting of ideas, events and transactions in spatial terms has become a common interdisciplinary practice. Consequently, this panel considers the problems and limitations of space in reckoning and representing relationships, flows, genealogies, constellations, and networks. In what ways do such undertakings predetermine or hierarchize content? What voids, blind spots, and dead ends arise in applying conceptions of space to differing contexts or visual practices? The panel seeks papers reflecting approaches to spatial discourse from a variety of methodological, historical, and/or textual frameworks. Papers topics may include, but are not limited to, issues in the theorization of space, applications of particular theoretical models, the relationship between the spatial and the visual, alternative or neglected understandings of space, or assessments of the consequences of spatiality for visual, media, or cultural studies. Please submit a 250-300 word abstract, brief bibliography and biographical note to smonteiro@aup.edu by 10 August.
