SCMS TRANSLATION GALLERY
Welcome to the SCMS Translation Gallery. In the last
decade our organization has actively sought to internationalize,
holding its conferences outside the borders of the US and steadily
increasing its membership from ranks of scholars working outside the US.
The aim of the Translation Gallery is to encourage
this internationalization across the faultlines of translation. It is a
commonplace that, for a number of reasons (most especially the
economics of publishing), translation of scholarship out of English by far surpasses translation into English. This trend is in turn exacerbated by the general tendency to deploy English to be the lingua franca of so much global intellectual exchange tout court.
In the process the vast body of scholarship, criticism and
conversations about cinema in other languages tends to remain invisible
other than within the narrow services of national cinema studies.
The Gallery is something of an experiment: we
provisionally think of it a bulletin board for anyone interested in
bringing a relevant text or document into the orbit of English-language
film and media scholars. Once posted on this page, the text will await
its translator—whether in full or as a fragment only. The translator
can choose whether to publish his or her translation elsewhere (and
simply send the Translation Gallery a courtesy note and a reference to
the publication), or else to post it on this site (in which case the
committee will vet the translation for some basic standard of
accuracy).
To post a translation notice, email the committee chair, Natasa Durovicova at natasa-durovicova@uiowa.edu.
A note on copyright: the translator retains
copyright to the translation. If the original text you wish to post for
translation is not in public domain, or already on-line, you might want
to initially post a brief note and reference about the nature of the
text, then solve any permissions issue individually. Click Here to View the Translation Gallery
