Membership Rate Changes for 2010–2011

After much discussion and debate, the SCMS Board of Directors has voted to change the membership rate structure beginning with the 2010–2011 membership year (starting in September 2010). The SCMS Officers and Board of Directors are sensitive to the financial strains that many in our field are facing, and we have not made the decision to increase rates without a great deal of thought and discussion.

Our decision was based on a number of factors, including the fact the Society was deriving no revenue from the $25 rate, along with the immediate and long-term costs of designing, implementing, and maintaining the new SCMS website. The new website will provide members with more functionality and increased opportunities for social networking and interactivity. It also will offer the Society more flexibility with conference planning and design, and with the potential to place certain components of the conference on-line in the future.

Membership rates are listed below and include a $10 increase on the bottom step and incremental increases of $5 thereafter. Our Canadian, Mexican, and International categories will follow the same rate increase with postage rates in these categories remaining what they were for the 2009–2010 membership year. Members from Canada/Mexico pay an additional $29 for postage. The postage fee for members outside US/Canada/Mexico is $44.
Income Range Previous Rates New Rates
Under $15,000/yr $25.00 $35.00
$16,000-$35,000/yr $30.00 $45.00
$36,000-$55,000/yr $50.00 $70.00
$56,000-$75,000/yr $75.00 $100.00
$76,000-$100,000/yr $100.00 $130.00
Over $100,000 $125.00 $160.00
Institutional Membership $175.00 $300.00
In addition to the above rate changes, the Board of Directors has voted to eliminate Joint Memberships across all categories (including Canada/Mexico and International). This decision was based upon two factors: First, our new website disallowed the number of membership categories we presently offer (over 30). Second, only .024% of our current membership falls within the Joint Member category.

Finally, Institutional Membership rates will increase from $175.00 to $300.00, reflecting the increased visibility our institutional members will enjoy on the new website. We are confident that SCMS is poised to move to the next phase of its future as a scholarly Society—with an enhanced web presence, new awards, and improved conference offerings—and the new membership rates will help defray the costs of our increased services.
