SOCIETY FOR CINEMA AND MEDIA STUDIES AWARDS The awards will be presented at the 2011 SCMS Conference in New Orleans, LA.
The Dissertation Award Committee of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies invites submissions for its annual award for outstanding dissertation in film, television, and media studies. The SCMS Dissertation Award carries a cash prize of $1,000 and is presented at the annual conference. Dissertations that address any cinema, television or media topic within the disciplinary concerns and traditions of humanities-based moving image and sound studies will be considered. Criteria for judging include clarity and strength of argumentation, quality and originality of scholarship and research, organization and coherence, prose style, and contribution to the understanding of the field of film, television, or media studies.
Candidates for the 2011 award must have earned their doctoral degrees between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010.
The deadline for submission is August 1, 2010.
Applicants must be SCMS members as of August 1, 2010, for the 2010-2011 membership year.
Submission Procedures:
1) A completed nomination form containing your name, e-mail address, title of the dissertation, the name of university awarding the degree, month, date, and year the award was received, and the name, e-mail address of the advisor/chair of your dissertation committee must be submitted online by August 1, 2010 (5pm CT).
All of the following materials should be submitted electronically to office@cmstudies.org with the subject line DISSERTATION AWARD.
2) A copy of your diploma or other official document confirming the date of the award of your PhD degree;
3) A signed letter of nomination from your dissertation advisor, explaining the strengths of your dissertation and its value to the field;
4) A PDF of your dissertation abstract (250-500 words in length). In it, please indicate ONE chapter you would recommend that the committee read, in addition to the introduction and conclusion, for the initial screening process.
5) An electronic copy of the entire dissertation in the form of a separate PDF file. No hard copies of the complete dissertation will be accepted.
Please label all files with your last name and first initial. All materials must be received by the SCMS office on or before August 1, 2010 (5pm CT).
Failure to follow procedures will result in disqualification.
The Society for Cinema and Media Studies Award for Student Writing recognizes graduate students who show outstanding ability in the field of film, television, and media scholarship in keeping with the disciplinary concerns and traditions of moving image and sound studies. Cash awards of $500, $300, and $200 are made to the winners, and the essay receiving first place is published (subject to revision) in Cinema Journal. Submissions are evaluated by the Student Writing Award Committee. The awards will be presented at the annual SCMS conference.
Each entrant must be an enrolled student in a graduate program in media studies or a related field, and must be a current member of SCMS at the time of submission of the essay. Essays prepared by students to fulfill course requirements may be submitted, as may work produced as part of a dissertation or thesis. An essay will not be accepted, however, if it has been previously published or accepted for publication in whole or in significant part. Each student may enter only one essay. Essays must be must be between 10,000 and 12,500 words in length, including notes and bibliography.
NOTE: To maintain the anonymity of the entrant, the author's name should not appear on or in the essay. Use an abbreviated version of the title as the file name.
Submission Procedures:
(a) Applicants must be SCMS members, as of August 1, 2010, for the 2010-2011 membership year and enrolled in a recognized program of graduate study at the time of submission for the award.
(b) Entries should be submitted in PDF format to the SCMS office at office@cmstudies.org by August 1, 2010 (5pm CT) with the subject heading SCMS STUDENT WRITING AWARD, along with
(c) A completed nomination form containing the author’s name, e-mail address, title of the essay, and identification of of graduate program attended.
Failure to follow procedures will result in disqualification.
At the 2011 annual meeting of SCMS, two KATHERINE SINGER KOVÁCS awards for outstanding scholarship in cinema and media studies will be announced. One award of $1,000 will be given to the author(s) of an outstanding book. Another award of $500 will be given for an outstanding essay (not exceeding 20,000 words). Certificates of citation will also be awarded to winners in both categories.
Books and articles must be published in English between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010. They should be original works that significantly advance scholarship and thinking in the field either by opening up new lines of inquiry or by consolidating existing ones at a high level of accomplishment. Books previously submitted for consideration for the 2010 Kovacs Book Award are not eligible.
Publishers and journal editors will be invited to nominate books and essays, but individual SCMS members should feel free either to submit copies of books or articles directly or urge their publisher or editor to do so.
Eligibility
To be eligible the essay must be written in or translated into English, and appear in a journal issue published in the calendar year preceding the judging of the award. Authors may self-nominate; individuals may make only one nomination.

Submission Procedures
(a) A completed nomination form ( ONE nomination per submission form) containing the author’s name, e-mail address, title of the book/essay, name of publisher, publication date, a contact name and e-mail address for someone within the publishing company must be submitted online by August 1, 2010 (5pm CT).
(b) FOUR copies of the book(s) must be received in the SCMS office on or before August 1, 2010 (5pm CST).
(c) The essay should be saved in PDF format so it can be read in Adobe Acrobat and e-mailed to the SCMS office at office@cmstudies.org on or before August 1, 2010 (5pm CST) with the subject heading KOVACS ESSAY AWARD.
Failure to follow procedures will result in disqualification.
Note: Once the nominated book(s) are received in the SCMS office, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to the nominator confirming receipt. If you do not receive a confirmation e-mail, it is your responsibility to confirm that the SCMS office has received the book(s) &/or essay(s) prior to the August 1 deadline.

Nominations for the SCMS Distinguished Career Achievement Award are invited from the membership. The Distinguished Career Achievement Award Committee will judge the nominees on the following criteria:
- Active membership in the Society for a number of years, and/or
- Partial or full retirement, and/or
- A record of distinguished contributions to the profession that have made a significant impact on the field.
(a) A completed nomination form containing the name of the nominee, his/her affiliation, mailing address, e-mail address and supporting comments about the nominee along with the contact name and e-mail address for the person(s) who is nominating the individual for the award must be submitted online by August 1, 2010 (5pm CT).

PEDAGOGY AWARD
SCMS has long recognized the value of pedagogy, devoting numerous panels and workshops to the subject at annual conferences and appointing a standing Teaching Committee. Cinema Journal likewise has devoted space to essays and special sections focused on teaching practice, philosophy, and innovation. In recognizing that continued development within our field relies on dedicated mentorship, as well as useful and influential materials, SCMS will confer an annual Pedagogy Award for outstanding pedagogical achievement in Cinema and Media Studies. SCMS will present a plaque and a check for $500 to the winner at the annual conference.
Individuals who have been nominated, but have not received the award are strongly encouraged to update their dossiers and resubmit.

Nomination Procedures:
(a) Nominees must be current SCMS members.
(b) A completed nomination form containing the name of the nominee, his/her affiliation, mailing and e-mail addresses and the nominator’s e-mail address must be submitted online to the SCMS office by August 1, 2010 (5pm CT).
(c) The SCMS office will notify nominees by August 13, 2010 to accept or decline the nomination.
(d) Nominees must respond to the notification by September 1, 2010.
(e) If the nomination is accepted, the nominator and nominee will be responsible for compiling and mailing six bound copies of dossier to the SCMS Office, 640 Parrington Oval, Wallace Old Science Hall, Room 300, Norman, Oklahoma 73019 on or before November 1, 2010.
The dossiers must conform to the nomination and dossier guidelines and format available online (see links below) and will consist of: nominee’s curriculum vitae, nominator’s statement, nominee's statement, documentation of nominee’s accomplishment in instruction, publication and development of educational materials and service.
