Joining Info and Procedure Q: Who may join SCMS?
Membership is open to educators and students, filmmakers, historians, film critics, other scholars and individuals and organizations concerned with the study of the moving image.
Q: What is a joint membership?
The joint membership categories allow members who live at the same address to share or receive only one copy of Cinema Journal per issue. Joint members will still have access to the discussion lists and the joblist, and will be included in the SCMS directory and will receive newsletters, announcements and other SCMS mailings through their individual, respective e-mail addresses.
Q: Our library abroad already receives Cinema Journal, may we waive receipt of the Journal, not pay the international mailing/shipping expenses, but continue to receive the other benefits of membership?
No, the system used by the home office does not have the capacity to exclude data for international members who do not pay shipping expenses.
Q: How do I join SCMS?
All members must first register ( How do I register for the website?) for the site before they can join. Three types of payment methods (funds must be paid in USD) are available: Credit Card using Paypal, Checks, and Money Orders. - Go to the SCMS website.
- In the “Login” box (located in the bottom left corner of the homepage), enter your username and password.
- Click the “Membership” topic from the main menu and then the sub-topic “Join/Renew Now”.
- Click the “Create New for (Current Year)” link.
- Select Membership Type.
- Select Income Level.
- Select Payment Method:
(a) Credit Card (Paypal)-If you wish to pay by credit card, please follow the step by step instructions on the screen. (b) Mail-If you wish to pay by check or money order (funds must be in USD), print the membership application and mail along with your payment to the address on the form.
Q: When does my membership expire?
The SCMS membership year runs from September 1-August 31 each calendar year. Access to Website Q: How do I register for the website?
- Go to the SCMS website.
- Click on the “Create One” link located at the bottom left corner of the homepage.
- Complete the registration form in its entirety and submit.
An e-mail will be sent to you with your username and password you created.
Other Membership Questions Q: How do I update my profile (change my e-mail and/or mailing address)?
- Go to the SCMS website.
- In the “Login” box (located in the bottom left corner of the homepage), enter your username and password.
- In the “User Menu” box (located in the bottom left corner), click on the “Update Member Profile” button.
- To update your member profile, select one of the tabs (User Info, Mailing Address, Phone/Fax, Directory Prefs, Title/Other, Caucus/SIG), enter your changes and press Update.
The message "Your settings have been saved" should appear above the tabs.
Please note: To verify profile updates, log out, log back in and visit Update Member Profile again. Also, under the Directory Prefs tab, please make sure the information you do not want listed in the SCMS directory is checked only.

Q: What if I forget my password?
- Go to the SCMS website.
- Click on the “Forgotten Your Password” link located at the bottom left corner of the homepage.
- Enter your username and e-mail address.
- Click the “Send Password” button.
An e-mail will be sent to you providing a new password.
Q: How do I change my password?
- Go to the SCMS website.
- In the “Login” box (located in the bottom left corner of the homepage), enter your username and password.
- In the “User Menu” box (also located in the bottom left corner of the homepage), click the “Change Password” button.
- To change your password, enter the new password in both the Password and Verify Password fields then press Update.
The message "Your settings have been saved" should appear above the tabs.
Please note: To verify a password change, log out and log back in using the new password.
Q: Why am I not listed in the directory published each spring in Cinema Journal?
Names and addresses of current members in the database by February 28 are included in the spring issue of Cinema Journal. If you wait to pay membership fees and conference registration fees just prior to the conference, it will be too late to be included in the spring issue of Cinema Journal.
