Dear SCMS members,

The Society is a member of the Coalition on the Academic Workforce (CAW). I serve as the SCMS representative to this group. Yesterday CAW released the findings of the 2010 survey on part-time faculty members. The report is available on the CAW website at http://www.academicworkforce.org. There is also an article about the report in today’s Chronicle of Higher Education (http://chronicle.com/article/Study-Paints-Portrait-of/132421/?cid=pm&utm_source=pm&utm_medium=en). I think this will be of great interest to all SCMS members.

Sincerely,

Patrice Petro
Past President, Society for Cinema & Media Studies
Vice Provost for International Education
Professor of English, Film Studies, and Global Studies
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

http://www.wral.com/news/education/story/10519962/ - SCMS members who are interested in the present discussion may also be interested in the related issue reported at this link.

Continued: I'd like to see more open discussion and transparency so we as members know what our leadership stands for, more communication between general members, SiG members, Caucus members and the executive board. When I see a dynamic website like the MLA, I feel that we are not going in the proper directions which is to provide a useful destination for our members. Instead, it feels stagnant and without a lot of resources or new material. I hope we can have the SCMS behind us in this increasingly difficult labor conditions for academics of all levels.

Thanks for posting this, but when I look at the CAW member policy statements and resolutions I see nothing from SCMS. I know we passed a resolution on Contingent labor in 1993, but that is not there, or is it any place on our website. Frankly, we know how bad it is out there for everyone without tenure (and some with tenure) and we' like the SCMS at the least to provide a page that outlines what we do to support and advocate for our members. We have a privacy policy and the bylaws links on our Positions and Policies tab. Here's a link to the MLA current resolutiions passed by the general membership;http://www.mla.org/governance/mla_resolutions/2012_resolutions They have to do with protecting the rights of academics from being sanctioned [for] addressing controversial economic and political issues concerning higher education or for supporting social-justice movements inside or outside the academy, and one that directly addresses student loans. I applaud the study, but more is needed.
