SCMS Awards Committees
Share |

The SCMS office receives and records the submissions and nominations for all awards, verifies SCMS membership where required, acknowledges receipt and notifies all applicants of the final outcome of the competitions.

Current SCMS awards include the the Dissertation Award, the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award, Katherine Singer Kovács Book Award, the Katherine Singer Kovács Essay Award, the Pedagogy Award, the Student Writing Award and the Service Award.  The $500 annual Service Award was established to recognize sustained and distinguished service to the Society.

To preserve the integrity of the award, the Board of Directors serves as the nominating and selection committee. If a member of an award selection committee has a close tie to an applicant or nominee (a former student, advisee, etc.), the committee member should notify the committee chair and excuse himself/herself from evaluating the award submission in question. [In 1989 fall EC minutes regarding the dissertation committee in particular: If the submission in question makes the short list, a new committee member (if possible, the chair of the previous year’s committee) will be asked to participate and read all of the submissions in the short list and help decide the winner.]

Award application/nomination deadlines are established with consideration of a number of factors including, the volume of applications, the application/nomination requirements, and the date of the annual conference.

All award committees must complete their work no later than one month before the annual conference. The winners are invited to attend the annual conference to receive their awards.

Award submissions are handled through the SCMS website (www.cmstudies.org). The SCMS staff coordinates updating the annual conference announcements and procedures, and notifies winners and applicants of the outcomes on behalf of SCMS and the committees. Past award winners are also listed on the website.

Committees that administer awards should be asked to provide a one-page précis of procedures used in their deliberations as part of their report to the Board of Directors for the annual meeting.
