It was a pleasure meeting many of you at last month’s Montreal Conference. For those of you that I missed, I look forward to connecting with you in Atlanta in 2016.

I feel fortunate for the opportunity of serving as your first Executive Director. SCMS is an inspiring organization with a rich history and a bright future. As I continue to acclimate to my new role, I welcome your feedback and your ideas for continuing to move our growing organization forward while retaining the strong legacy that has been established over the years. Call for Committee Service

SCMS is a member-run organization, and service to our profession remains critical to the ongoing health of our field and to our scholarly organization. Serving on an SCMS committee is an excellent way to network with other members and to provide vital service to the organization. Descriptions for standing, annual, and award committees (below) are provided on the SCMS website under About Us.

Standing Committees:Information Technologies; Nominating; Professional Development; Public Policy; and Translation/Publication

Annual Committees: Conference Host; Conference Program

Award Committees: Anne Friedberg Award for Innovative Scholarship, Best First Book, Best Edited Collection, Best Essay in an Edited Collection, Best Dissertation, Distinguished Career Achievement, Kovács Book, Kovács Essay, Pedagogy, and Student Writing Awards.

The term of service for all award committees except the Distinguished Career Achievement Award is one year. The Distinguished Career Achievement Award term is three years.

To volunteer to serve on a committee, please volunteer through the SCMS website: The names and affiliations of the volunteers will be forwarded to the SCMS Board of Directors for review and approval. The SCMS Office staff will notify members selected for committee service during the summer.

Call for Paper, Panel, and Workshop Proposals

The Society for Cinema and Media Studies announces its call for proposals for the 2016 conference.

Please join us Wednesday, March 30 – Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Hilton Atlanta.

In Atlanta, fine dining, shopping and rich history combine with inspiration-inducing attractions to create a city with Southern charm and world-class sophistication. It’s easy to see why Atlanta, Georgia is one of the most popular destinations in the Southeast to live and to visit. Atlanta is the primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States, via highway, railroad, and air, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport being the world’s busiest airport for the 15th straight year. Atlanta is home to Coca Cola, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, CNN, the world’s largest aquarium-Georgia Aquarium, the High Museum of Art, The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, and Centennial Olympic Park. Atlanta is also home to Emory University, Georgia State University, and the nation’s most prestigious historically Black colleges: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College. The 2016 SCMS Conference Program Committee welcomes quality paper, panel, and workshop proposals on any topic related to cinema and media studies. Proposal submission forms will be available through the SCMS website on June 1, 2015. The deadline for proposals is Friday, August 28, 2015 (5:00 pm Central Time).

SCMS 2016 Bulletin Board Announcements

To encourage and facilitate the development of panel and workshop proposals, SCMS provides an online forum on which you can announce your topics for panel or workshop proposals to solicit presenters and participants. To submit a posting to the official 2016 Conference Bulletin Board, click on the 2016 Conference Bulletin Board link below and then on Post New Topic. Only ONE announcement per person please. The deadline for posting announcements is July 15, 2015 at 5pm CT.

Bulletin Board and Panel/Workshop Announcement Guidelines:

  • To be able to submit an announcement, individuals must be registered users (either a member or a temporary member) of the SCMS website.
  • All chairs/organizers must notify individuals of acceptance or rejection by August 14, 2015.
  • Individuals whose submissions are accepted for an advertised panel or workshop must provide the required information for completion of the proposal forms to the chair/organizer by August 21, 2015, 5pm CT.
  • When creating your proposal, do not include more than two individuals from the same institution.
  • Panels should have a chair and four presenters or a chair, three presenters, and one respondent. Workshops should have a chair and at least four participants, but no more than five (excluding the chair or co-chairs).

2016 Conference Bulletin Board

Note: Submitting proposals for consideration to the SCMS Bulletin Board is not the same as submitting a finished proposal for evaluation by the 2016 Conference Program Committee. The link to the Atlanta 2016 conference proposal forms will be active in June 2015. Note: To submit the survey, you will need to answer every question, but please feel free to type in N/A for questions you do not wish to answer. While including your contact information with the survey submission is optional, you must include your contact information if you would like to be entered into the drawing.

SCMS Members’ Business Meeting: Minutes
Friday, March 27, 2015: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
SCMS Conference, Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, Montreal

I. Welcome and Introductions: Barb Klinger

SCMS President Klinger welcomed members to the conference, and to Montreal, and thanked the Host Committee and local institutions for their support.

She began by reiterating SCMS policies regarding the Society’s resistance to taking stands on issues that presume to represent all members in matters that are not directly related to the shared concerns of the Society.
Klinger then summarized the recent election results, introducing the newly elected members of the Executive Board, and thanking those who would be outgoing this year for their service. She also encouraged other members to volunteer for service in additional roles, including on the many SCMS committees that rely upon the time and energy of members. She especially thanked those who served on this year’s host committee and conference committee, as well as Caucus and Special Interest Group representatives, for their service to SCMS. All members were also encouraged to consider donating to SCMS, especially to support conference travel and awards funds.

II. 2013 Conference Report: Steven Cohan

After thanking SCMS members and staff crucial to the planning of the conference, Cohan summarized this year’s data, emphasizing that the 2015 conference received a record number of proposals, resulting in a large and diverse program. Noting that the current acceptance rate is around 80% for pre-constituted panels, and 56% for open call proposals, Cohan emphasized that inclusion on pre-constituted panels remains the most likely route for members to have proposals to the conference accepted.

III. Executive Director’s Report: Jill Simpson

Simpson provided a detailed summary of the various criteria (including geography, ease of travel, and weather, in addition to costs) that determine the selection of conference sites, and emphasized the importance of members booking rooms in the official conference hotel, necessary to our ability to hold cost-effective conferences.
She also clarified that the Executive Board has been closely monitoring and planning for the possibility of pending legislation in Georgia that could impact the 2016 conference already planned for Atlanta. She noted that restrictive and perhaps discriminatory legislation in other states will be an ongoing concern for SCMS when choosing future conference locations, and these will remain closely monitored. (Shortly after the 2015 conference, the impending vote in the Georgia House had been cancelled.)

IV. Treasurer’s Report: Amanda Ann Klein

Klein summarized the current, healthy fiscal status of SCMS, citing current membership and conference figures (1851 registrants), and total assets ($1.3M). She also noted that SCMS is currently considering new ways to use some of its finances, including possible changes in some of its investments; Klein also noted that the arrival of Executive Director Jill Simpson promises to have a positive impact on SCMS in general and that the Executive Director has begun to work closely with the Treasurer.

V. Cinema Journal Report: Will Brooker

Cinema Journal editor Brooker noted that his tenure as editor will be ending and a search for his replacement will begin in 2016. After citing basic statistics for the journal, he drew attention to many of the journal’s ongoing features and initiatives, including the “In Focus,” section of the journal and the online Afterthoughts and Postscripts, a visible presence via Facebook, Twitter, as well as expanding and productive links with Aca-Media,, Antenna, and In Media Res. He also noted that the new online journal [in]Transition, overseen by Cinema Journal in collaboration with MediaCommons, was already being recognized this year with an SCMS Award of Distinction.

VI. Information-Technology Report: Aviva Dove-Viebahn

Dove-Viebahn noted the availability of two mobile apps for the conference (one a test), and encouraged members to respond to the conference survey regarding their use; she also noted that approximately 400 conference abstracts had been digitized as part of another test for future use, and reported that five workshops would be streaming this year, with links to the SCMS Facebook page: these will also be archived. She concluded by offering to help all Scholarly Interest Groups and Caucuses to increase their web presence, and to field any technical questions relevant to SCMS groups and members.

VII. Fieldnotes Report: Haidee Wasson

Wasson summarized the ongoing progress of the Fieldnotes project, citing the three oral histories (Linda Williams, Janet Staiger, Gertrud Koch) now posted on the SCMS website, and announcing others currently in preparation, including those being currently conducted at the conference. She also encouraged members to offer suggestions of additional names for interviewees and interviewers.

VIII. Questions from the Audience

Klinger responded to questions from the audience regarding 1) the possibility of future conferences in Europe or other international locations (including Cuba and the Pacific Rim), and 2) the possibility of an SCMS group for administrators to consider (and perhaps defend) changes to the discipline. Klinger emphasized that international conferences pose distinct difficulties, but remain viable and attractive options, and suggested that a workshop for cinema and media studies administrators at the 2016 conference would be a welcome first step towards regular discussion of administrative matters relevant to the discipline within SCMS. Dove-Viebahn noted that the survey material she is gathering (to be released this summer) should be a valuable resource in such discussions.
