Call for Special Event Proposals for 2021

Propose a Special Event for the 2021 Annual Conference!

We find ourselves in a challenging moment, and SCMS is inviting submissions for special events that may address the unique situations and phenomena of this period, and that fully engage the disciplines of cinema and media in the discussion. These topics might include, among others, the effects and affects of the global COVID 19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement, the #MeToo movement, the exploitation of nature/climate change, the abuse of Indigenous peoples, the criminalization of immigrants across the globe, and the increasing economic divides that leave many in positions of precarity (the latter of which can complement the Precarious Labor Town Hall, rescheduled from 2020). The present moment has also reignited long-standing debates related to inclusivity and representation, the problematic nature of film/media canons, the ubiquity of surveillance in global societies, and the need for new pedagogical approaches in cinema and media studies, especially in the 21st-Century.

We encourage proposals conceived through collaboration across Caucuses, Scholarly Interest Groups, and SCMS members at large, and for that purpose, we have set up a bulletin board to create a synergistic space for discussion. While special events have historically been specific to the conference site, the 2021 virtual format allows us to collectively address timely issues that impact our international, media-focused membership.
