SCMS+

SCMS+

SCMS+ seeks proposals from SCMS members. SCMS+ is an experimental initiative by the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, intended to offer a curated digital space to SCMS members for scholarly reflections, events, and other forums and formats that can help extend the conversation among members of the SCMS community beyond the annual conference.

SCMS+ is not peer-reviewed and is not related to JCMS, the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies. It is meant to be informal, dynamic, responsive, and member-led. Sponsored events will be organized and run by SCMS members.

We encourage members to use SCMS+ creatively, to offer events and discussions between and beyond the annual conference. Please see previous SCMS+ topics here and feel free to offer new ideas and initiatives. SCMS+ is a way to publicize symposiums or rapid response town halls, for grad students and others to curate timely contributions not suited to traditional academic journals, for department chairs to host seminars about the job market, for innovators to host conversations about pedagogy, for videographic critics to compile and showcase their work, and more. Recognizing that SIGs and Caucuses are already offering extensive online programming, SCMS+ offers a venue for collaboration between groups interested in similar events (e.g. job market workshops), a space for archiving past events, and a platform for publicizing future ones. We welcome proposals from any member of SCMS for events and workshops of interest to our membership.

Review Process

Proposals for SCMS+ will be vetted by a standing committee and approved based on criteria of timeliness, organization, and scheduling. The committee will meet two times per year: in January (after conference notifications) and in May (after the conference) to review applications, but it will also accept and review proposals on a rolling basis to accommodate proposed events requiring rapid response.
