Since 2003, the Distinguished Service Award has recognized individuals who have shown sustained commitment to the Society. The Board of Directors nominates and selects the winner, though they are not required to choose a winner every year, only when a deserving candidate is identified. Nominations are made before the Fall Board of Directors' meeting to give Board members ample time to thoroughly consider the nominees. The nominee should not be a current Board member. Board members must prepare a nomination statement detailing the nominee's service to SCMS (excluding scholarly achievements) and explaining why they deserve the award.
