Right (control) Click to Download Logo JPG Mission StatementThe mission of the Indigenous Media Caucus is to provide a forum and network for Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and filmmakers to support and give visibility to Indigenous filmmaking and to scholarly research into Indigenous film, television, and digital media. Our scope is global, covering the entirety of Abiayala (the Americas) and beyond, in recognition of the joint histories of coloniality and survivance at the root of global Indigenous experience. We provide a space for the discussion of Indigenous media theory, history, and criticism, and for the promotion of critical methods and theoretical approaches that center Indigenous epistemologies in our work on the production, circulation, and consumption of media. Furthermore, the Caucus provides a platform for establishing the relationships between scholars that lead to individual and collaborative projects/publications that, in turn, nurture the future of Indigenous media studies. We will accomplish these objectives through: - An email list to share Calls for Papers, Calls for Publications, and other opportunities of interest to Caucus members.
- Panels, workshops, screenings, Caucus meetings, and special events organized at the annual SCMS conference.
- Hosting established Native American and Indigenous media scholars and creatives at the annual SCMS conference.
- Promoting Indigenous media scholarship at a book table or other venues organized at the SCMS annual conference.
- Promoting and increasing academic publications in collaboration with JCMS and other Film and Media publications.
- Promoting Indigenous media scholarship in Indigenous mother tongues as well as in settler languages other than English at the annual SCMS conference.
- Active engagement of graduate students as well as independent scholars and artists working in the field of Indigenous media.
- Mentorship for junior scholars/media makers.
