What We Do

The mission of the Critical Media Pedagogies Scholarly Interest Group is to intervene in issues surrounding the shifting nature of communication and expression wrought by digital technologies in the highly mediated world that characterizes the 21st century. In particular, the ML+PO SIG endeavors to bring excellence and rigor to the study of contemporary educational practices, and conceptually-sound support to educators across institutional differences, with the ultimate goal of fostering competent control of the available semiotic resources. The ML+PO SIG concerns itself with the type of large-scale public literacy necessary for a thriving democracy.

Goals and Objectives

The common scholarly, pedagogical, and professional interests among ML + PO SIG members include: coalition building among constituencies in higher education, K-12 educators, community groups, public programmers and policy makers; sustained consideration of and engagement with best practices for media literacy and its attendant pedagogy; and, finally, the creation of a set of standards for gauging excellence in digital scholarship which can inform the larger field of cinema studies and intervene in issues surrounding tenure and promotion.

History

The SCMS Executive Council formed the Media Literacy and Outreach Committee in 2003, and in 2006 the SCMS Board approved the formation of a scholarly interest group devoted to Media Literacy and Outreach.
