Mission Statement

The Digital Humanities & Videographic Criticism Scholarly Interest Group (DHVC-SIG) seeks to promote research, teaching, collaboration, and broader awareness around two intersecting and complementary areas of practice. Digital Humanities, a broad interdisciplinary movement with many factions and facets, typically embraces computational methods and multimodal digital dissemination of scholarship, with particular resonance for film and media scholars interested in both multimedia publishing and digital cultural forms. Videographic criticism, an emerging form native to film & media studies, aims to convey ideas and arguments about film and media using sounds and images as a distinct rhetorical mode with unique possibilities for both research and expression. Together, the DHVC-SIG strives to create a community of practice connecting digital humanities and videographic scholarship and striving to integrate these two vibrant areas of innovation.


Aims and Objectives

  1. To create a community of practice for SCMS members interested in digital humanities and/or videographic criticism, with opportunities and venues for shared resources, conversations, and collaborations via both online social media and in-person events
  2. To sponsor panels and workshops at the SCMS conference on DH and videographic topics
  3. To advise and encourage Cinema Journal and other official SCMS platforms on the publication and promotion of digital scholarship
  4. To advise and work with the SCMS board and standing committees, including the Information Technology, Media Archives, and Public Policy Committees, to advocate for practices that include and support a broad range of scholarly modes and platforms, as appropriate for our Society in the digital era, including issues around open access, peer review, copyright, and digital preservation
  5. To represent SCMS to the broader digital humanities community, including forging connections with other societies, organizations, publications, funding agencies, and related projects
  6. To connect with potential venues to screen and distribute videographic criticism outside of traditional academic conferences, including film festivals, general audience websites, museums and galleries, and official DVD/Bluray supplements
  7. To hold an annual SIG meeting at SCMS to share news within our related subfields, encourage collaborations, mentor new members, and demonstrate emerging developments and projects within DH


  1. All members of the Digital Humanities and Videographic Criticism Scholarly Interest Group (DHVC-SIG) shall be members in good standing of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
  2. Annual meetings of the DHVC-SIG will be convened at the SCMS conference.
  3. Two members from the SIG shall serve as Co-Chairs for staggered terms of three years each. Election of the Co-chairs shall be conducted at the first annual meeting of the SIG during the 2017 conference with the outcome reported to the SCMS Board of Directors.
  4. It will be the responsibilities of the Co-Chairs to:

    a. communicate with the membership

    b. organize the annual meetings and prepare minutes of the business discussed

    c. report annually to the SCMS Board of Directors on the Group’s activities and attendance figures for the last meeting

    d. request funding to support DHVC-SIG meetings

    e. promote annual panels and workshops

    f. advise on the maintenance of the website and other social media outlets

    g. submit a request to the Program Committee of the SCMS conference for a time and space to meet (in response to the annual call made by the Committee to SIGs).

  5. In addition to the Co-Chairs, a graduate student representative will also be elected to serve a two-year term after the initial organizational meeting of the SIG. Her/his responsibilities are to coordinate with other graduate student networks relevant to the DHVC-SIG and within the Society as a whole.
  6. At all meetings of the Group, ten members shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business. The vote of the majority of members present at a meeting at which a quorum is present constitutes the action of the Group.
  7. Any member of the SIG may make a proposal regarding the DHVC-SIG or its activities.

    a. Members must forward to the co-chairs all proposals prior to placing the proposal before the SIG membership. It is the responsibility and duty of the co-chairs to then forward all proposals to membership. However, no approval by either or both co-chairs is required for proposals to be advanced to membership.

    b. When issues are submitted to the members of the Group for vote via e-mail, the members shall have seven business days to respond. The subject line of the e-mail shall contain the word ‘vote’ to alert members to act.

    c. Within the voting time period specified in each proposal, members may debate the merits of any proposal as much as they like.

    d. Members may vote only once on any proposal. Members are thus encouraged to carefully consider any and all arguments regarding a proposal before voting.

  8. Action on behalf of the Group may be taken without a meeting if a majority of the members of the Group provide consent by writing or e-mail. The written consents shall be filed with the minutes of the next meeting.
