(formerly the Sound Studies SIG)
Who we are
The Sound and Music Studies Interest Group was formed to encourage and
develop the study of sound across academic disciplines, bringing together
scholars and practitioners working in the fields of cinema studies, radio,
television and communication, new media studies, popular music studies and
cultural studies. Our mission is to provide a much-needed forum for scholars
and students to present new research in film and media sound and to help shape
this evolving interdisciplinary field of sound studies.
What we do
We aim to provide a forum in which scholars and students of
sound can present and discuss their work, organize panels, and propose
workshops for the annual conference, and work together to accomplish the goals
and objectives of the group. We also seek to foster an awareness of sound
related issues in film and media, and to encourage new research and further
scholarship in these areas.

Our activities and accomplishments
The Sound and Music Studies Scholarly Interest Group was very active
at the historic 2010 Los Angeles conference, sponsoring four sound-related
panels, including our own special session, "Unheard Histories of Sound in Media and Cinema.” We also held a
highly successful meeting, which featured several sound practitioners working
in the Hollywood post-production sound industry offering SCMS members a
behind-the-scenes glimpse of the field.
2007: The SCMS Board of Directors
approves a proposal, prepared and submitted by Jay Beck and Tony Grajeda, for the formation of the Sound Studies
Interest Group at its fall meeting.
2008: the Sound Studies Interest Group founding
organizational meeting and reception, March 8,
2008, Philadelphia (38 in attendance).
2010: 117 members
2010: Norma Coates elected as new co-chair, replacing
founding co-chair Tony Grajeda.
