The Children’s and Youth Media and Culture SIG will foster, support, and promote scholarship on media by, about, and for young people, create opportunities for conference presentations as well as articles and monograph publication for its members, and nurture the relationship between the SIG and SCMS by organizing and sponsoring panels, special journal issues, and edited collections.

In service of this mission, the Children’s and Youth Media and Culture SIG will

  1. Showcase the foundational and ongoing debates within our field through conferences at the annual SCMS conference
  2. Seek opportunities to increase scholarship on children’s and youth media in Cinema Journal and at the annual conference through panels and workshops
  3. Assist young scholars in their professionalization through collaboration with established scholars, discussions at the annual conference and via a listserv, and an informal mentorship program
  4. Promote diversity within the SIG and SCMS through collaborations across academic ranks, disciplines, methods, national borders
  5. Operate a trusted resource for media outlets seeking expert opinions on issues related to media, childhood/youth, and young people
  6. Encourage the development of the study of children and youth through different approaches and methods, media, and modes of scholarly engagement (including digital formats and public forums)
  7. Develop pedagogy through robust conversations among members as well as the creation of a space for exchanging syllabi and assignments
  8. Maintain a listserv and social media to support scholarly research and foster a welcoming community between conferences

  1. Members of the Steering Committee and general membership in the Children’s and Youth Media and Culture SIG will be active and in good standing with SCMS.
  2. When the terms of Steering Committee members approach expiration, elections for new officers will be held via email in August.
  3. The SIG will be co-chaired by two SCMS members who are not graduate students.
  4. One member of the Steering Committee shall be a graduate student.
  5. Each Steering Committee member serves a three-year term. They may serve again, but not immediately after a previous term.
