ANNOUNCING CINEMA JOURNAL EDITOR 2018-2022

We are pleased to announce that the Board has selected Dr. Caetlin Benson-Allott to be the next editor of Cinema Journal. Caetlin begins her one-year apprenticeship on January 1, 2017. Her apprenticeship will be followed by a five-year term as Editor from January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2022. Her first issue will be 57.4, appearing in the summer of 2018.

Caetlin is Associate Professor of English and Film and Media Studies at Georgetown University. She is the author of Killer Tapes and Shattered Screens: Video Spectatorship from VHS to File Sharing (University of California Press, 2013) and Remote Control (Bloomsbury Press, January 2015). Her work on US film cultures, exhibition history and material culture, spectatorship theory, and gender and sexuality studies has appeared in Cinema Journal, The Atlantic, South Atlantic Quarterly, Journal of Visual Culture, Jump Cut, Film Quarterly, Film Criticism, Feminist Media Histories, In Media Res, FLOW, and multiple anthologies. After winning Film Quarterly's 50th Anniversary Review Essay Competition in 2008, she became a contributing editor and wrote a regular column for the journal from 2011 to 2013, which she revived in 2016.

In 2015, she edited special issues of Feminist Media Histories (on "Materialisms") and the Journal of Visual Culture (with Eugenie Brinkema on "The Design and Componentry of Horror"). She is currently working on a book-length study of six influential objects in contemporary media culture, arguing that the meanings we draw from media are shaped by the technologies we use to preserve media, the objects that come into and become extensions of our screening spaces, and the substances we consume while consuming media. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Modern Language Association's Screen Arts and Culture Forum and multiple editorial boards. She teaches courses on film history and theory, histories of new media, gender and technology studies, and the horror genre.

Caetlin joined SCMS in 2010. As Cinema Journal Editor, she plans to utilize "In Focus" as a forum for outreach within our membership and to bring in new authors and expand our membership, thereby expanding the interdisciplinary mission of SCMS. She is also committed to include more television, radio, and other media scholarship in Cinema Journal and soliciting interviews with and scholarly profiles of media makers and industry executives.

Please join us in welcoming Caetlin as the next Cinema Journal editor!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Best wishes for the holidays from the SCMS home office! At this time of year, our thoughts turn gratefully to all of you who have made unique and valuable contributions to SCMS in the past year. Thank you!

A special note of gratitude goes out to 2016-17 Program Committee Chair, Pam Wojcik, Conference Scheduler, Bruce Brasell, and this year's hard-working and dedicated reading pairs. Their tasks are now complete, and the 2017 Chicago conference is shaping up to be another great one.

On December 21, the home office will post a preliminary draft of the conference program at cmstudies.org and follow up with you via an email notification. As you are aware, the draft is a work-in-progress so it will not contain room numbers, but the schedule itself will be locked. This year, in an effort to help you determine your travel dates, the preliminary draft will include information on 2017 conference events. Please note that the home office must receive your requests for corrections to your information by January 2.

The 2016-17 Caucus and SIG Funding Committee is currently reviewing the many funding requests we received this year. It is the committee's goal to accommodate as many requests as is allowed within the SCMS annual budget giving priority to proposals that demonstrate forethought and planning for scholarly purposes. The home office will notify all applicants of the committee's final decision in mid-January.

Planning and preparation are well underway for the fifth annual 2017 SCMS-U scheduled to take place on April 20-22, 2017 at the University of Minnesota. The SCMS Board and Conference organizer Graeme Stout request your assistance in getting the word out about the conference to your undergraduate students. A link to the call for proposals and submission form is included in this issue.

I wish you happiness, abundance and peace in the coming year.

The fifth annual SCMS Undergraduate Conference invites undergraduate students to propose papers representing their best work in cinema and media studies. At the conference, students will deliver papers on any aspect of cinema and media history, criticism, or theory. Any student who wishes to participate in the conference should submit a completed proposal form, which will include a 200-word abstract. Do not submit complete papers. The submission form can be found here: http://www.cmstudies.org/resource/resmgr/2017_conference/SCMS-U_2017_Submission_Form.docx

A panel composed of University of Minnesota faculty will select 30 proposals for acceptance to the conference. All selected conference participants must agree to attend all full days of the event. Panels will be scheduled for Friday (4/21) and Saturday (4/22), with reception on the Thursday night (4/20). Registration is free, and on-campus hotel accommodations will be available at a discounted student rate for conference participants. Students are encouraged to seek travel funding from their home institutions to defray the costs of travel and lodging. Students attending the conference will also be provided with passes to the Walker Arts Center ( http://www.walkerart.org) and the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (http://mspfilm.org/festivals/mspiff)

Fieldnotes is an SCMS project to conduct, circulate and archive interviews with pioneers of film and media studies. In addition to recognizing the contributions of key scholars, the project also aims to foster knowledge of and interest in the diverse and dynamic developments that have shaped -- and continue to shape -- our expanding field.

STATEMENT ON DIVERSITY

At this historical moment the Board of Directors of SCMS recognizes that the humanities and humanistic knowledge, on which cinema and media studies are still broadly based, are now more essential than ever. We therefore pledge to maintain SCMS as an inclusive organization open to all individuals who share our field's commitments to diverse and multiple national origins, races, ethnicities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, classes, abilities, migration statuses, and other expressions or categorizations of identity. We understand that this commitment extends to our membership overall as well as to what we study.

MLA STATEMENT ON THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The SCMS Board of Directors have voted to endorse the following statement approved by the MLA Executive Council in November 2016:

Throughout the campaign and in the aftermath of the presidential election in the United States, sharp political lines have been drawn that pit groups and individuals against one another on the basis of national origin, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, migration status, ability, class, and other forms of identity. The Modern Language Association reaffirms in the strongest terms possible its commitment to free inquiry and academic freedom for all, unimpeded by acts of prejudice and hate. We note especially the need to offer support to those who are the most vulnerable and condemn the unjust rhetoric that targets them. We recognize that the humanities and humanistic knowledge are now more essential than ever to help guide us in these difficult times, and we pledge to maintain the MLA as an organization open to all individuals who share our commitments.

ACLS Digital Extension Grants

Deadline: January 25, 2017

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is pleased to invite applications for the 2016-17 ACLS Digital Extension Grant competition, which is made possible by the generous assistance of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It is hoped that these grants will help advance humanistic scholarship by enhancing established digital research projects and extending their reach to new communities of users.

This program aims to extend the opportunity to participate in the digital transformation of humanistic inquiry to a greater number of humanities scholars. To this end, projects supported by ACLS Digital Extension Grants may:

* Extend established digital projects and resources with content that adds diversity or interdisciplinary reach

* Develop new systems of making established digital resources available to broader audiences and/or scholars from diverse institutions

* Foster new team-based work or collaborations that allow scholars from institutions with limited digital infrastructure to exploit digital resources

* Create new forms and sites for scholarly engagement with the digital humanities.

Projects that document and recognize participant engagement are strongly encouraged

* Support projects aimed at preserving and making sustainable established digital projects and content.

ACLS will award up to six Digital Extension Grants in this competition year. Each grant provides funding of up to $125,000 to support a range of project costs, including, where necessary, salary replacement for faculty or staff. As this program places special emphasis on extending access to digital research opportunities to scholars working at US colleges and universities of all categories, applicants also may request up to an additional $25,000 to fund concrete plans to collaborate with and build networks among scholars from US higher education institutions of diverse profiles. Thus each grant carries a maximum possible award of $150,000.

The deadline for applications is 9pm EST, January 25, 2017. Applications will be accepted only through ACLS's Online Fellowship and Grant Application (OFA) system.

Additional information about the eligibility criteria and terms of ACLS Digital Extension Grants is available at www.acls.org/programs/digitalextension

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Happy fall! As we reach the midway point in the academic term, I hope things are going smoothly for each of you.

In the coming weeks, the SCMS Home Office will be sending out several key emails to you including conference proposal accept/decline notices, the outcome of conference event proposal deliberations, and travel grant award recipient notices. Considering a good many of you relocate just prior to the beginning of the academic year, we ask that you please take a moment now to verify that we have the correct email address for you in your membership profile. This will ensure that you continue to receive notifications in a timely manner.

Conference proposal accept and decline notices will be emailed to you between November 2-9. If you have not received a notification by Friday, November 11, please email the Home Office at scms-office@ou.edu.

Thank you to those of you who recently submitted event proposals for the 2017 Chicago conference. We received a total of eight proposals this year. All are currently being considered by the Caucus and SIG Liaisons, the Conference Program Committee, and the 2017 Chicago Host Committee Chairs who will make their recommendations to the Board of Directors at this weekend's fall meeting. Please note that proposals are evaluated based on their potential to attract a strong audience and to highlight the activities of their group(s). Conference budget limitations and scheduling are also taken into consideration in determining which events are accepted. All members who submitted proposals will be notified of the board's decision by email in early November.

This weekend, the Executive Council will also deliberate on the selection of a new Cinema Journal Editor, with an official announcement to be made by early November. The new Editor will begin his/her first year apprenticeship working with outgoing Editor, Will Brooker, as of January 1, 2017. Will's tenure as Editor officially ends on December 31, 2017, with the newly selected Editor taking the reins for a five-year term beginning on January 1, 2018.

In closing, please consider SCMS when planning your year-end charitable giving. By making a tax-deductible donation to the General Fund, you are helping SCMS to continue its mission of promoting a broad understanding of film, television, and related media. A donation to the Travel Funds for under/unemployed members and graduate student members allows you to directly assist your peers by helping defray the cost of their travel to the SCMS annual conference. An Award Funds donation supports SCMS's annual awards established to honor the best in our field.

Finally, a donation to the SCMS-U Undergraduate Fund assists undergraduate students who typically have no access to professional resources to attend the annual undergraduate conference.

Thank you.

Jill Simpson Executive Director

CHICAGO 2017 PROPOSAL NUMBERS

1004 Open Call Papers

349 Pre-Constituted Panels

53 Workshops

28 Readers

YOU SUBMITTED A PROPOSAL...NOW WHAT?

As Pamela Wojcik, the 2017 Conference Program Committee Chair, and her intrepid team of readers begin the arduous task of reviewing over 1400 proposals, we want to shed some light on the evaluation process.

Step 1: Evaluation of Proposals

Once the submission deadline has passed, proposals are clustered according to category (workshop, pre-constituted panels, open call papers) and the open-call papers are then grouped according to their topics. Prior to the submission deadline,
the Board of Directors appoints a Program Committee comprising pairs of readers for the various categories of proposals. The Program Committee Chair now distributes the groups of proposals to the reading pairs for their independent evaluations. Proposals
are then scored, and the readers send their averaged scores to the Program Chair. Open-call readers also suggest how accepted papers may fit together into panels.

Step 2: Panel and Workshop Capacity is Determined

While the readers are hard at work, the SCMS office staff creates a conference grid of all the dates/times/sessions. The grid reflects the total number of panels and workshops that can be accommodated at the conference. Once
the total number of panels and workshops is determined, this information is communicated to the Program Committee Chair.

Step 3: Proposals are Accepted or Declined

As soon as the Program Committee Chair has finalized the proposal decisions, the SCMS Home Office notifies participants whether their submission was accepted or declined. These notifications are sent in early to mid-November.

Step 4: Conference Scheduling

The Conference Scheduler's Herculean task now gets under way in scheduling panels and workshops. As soon as the task is completed and reviewed by the Program Chair, a first draft of the schedule is posted at

Molly Youngblood joined the SCMS Home Office on August 29 as our new Program Coordinator. In her new role, Molly will work to provide assistance to the board and members, annual conference administration, and support to the Home Office and Executive Director,
  Jill Simpson.

Molly moves back to her hometown of Norman, OK after studying Arts Administration and Policy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She brings with her five years of experience in the public library sector, as well as relevant skills
she developed from various positions held within higher education while completing her MA degree. SCMS wishes to welcome Molly to the Home Office!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S NOTE

With the conference proposal and award submission deadlines now behind us, September marks the point when we begin looking forward to Chicago 2017. Next year's conference will take place March 22-26 at the beautiful Fairmont, Millennium Park. http://www.fairmont.com/chicago

In this issue of News Brief, we have provided you with a breakdown of this year's conference proposal and award submissions numbers. You will also find details about what happens next in the conference proposal reading and deliberation process. As noted
under Important Dates, accept/decline notices are scheduled to go out the first week of November. The awards deliberations are on a different timeline and will conclude by January 6, with results notifications scheduled to go out to all of those nominated
  by January 9.

As a final reminder, if you would like to submit a proposal to host a conference event in Chicago, please visit /page/EventProposal. Submissions are due by Friday, September
  30 at 5pm CST.

We are pleased to announce that the SCMS Professional Development Committee will be expanding their annual webinars to a quarterly format. This decision was made in large part due to the comments you provided in this year's Conference Survey requesting
more professional development opportunities. The committee will be working in collaboration with SCMS Caucuses and SIGs to identify meaningful topics for future webinars. The first in the new series is scheduled for October 8, with details included
  in this month's issue.

In closing, the Home Office's summer of transitions has now successfully concluded with the rounding out of our new team. In this issue, we are happy to introduce to you Molly Youngblood, our new Program Coordinator. She brings to the role many strengths
including institutional administration, archives management, interdepartmental coordination, and public outreach. Molly fills the vacancy left by Lindsey Pendleton earlier in the summer. Lindsey remains with us in the freelance role of Conference
Program Liaison through January. Molly looks forward to meeting each of you at the conference in Chicago!

IN MEMORIAM

David Lavery

(August 27, 1949 - August 30, 2016)

It is with sadness that SCMS notes the August 2016 passing of David Lavery. Professor Lavery was faculty in the English Department at Middle Tennessee State University where he had been Chair and Director of Graduate Studies. Prior to his
appointment at MTSU (1993-present), Dr. Lavery held appointments at the University of Memphis, at Northern Kentucky University, and several visiting appointments, including a post at East China Normal University in Shanghai.

Lavery was a dedicated mentor, generous editor, and prolific scholar. His books include-among many others--works on television fandom, authorship, genre, "cult" series, Joss Whedon, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, and the forthcoming Finale:
Considering the Ends of Television Shows (Syracuse University Press), edited with Douglas Howard and David Bianculli.

THE NATIONAL HUMANITIES CENTER

The National Humanities Center will offer up to 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities for the period September 2017 through May 2018. Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. Mid-career scholars as
well as senior scholars are encouraged to apply. Emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work are also invited to apply. The Center does not normally support the revision of a doctoral dissertation. In addition to scholars from all
fields of the humanities, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. The Center is international in scope and welcomes applications from scholars
  outside the United States.

Areas of Special Interest

Most of the Center's fellowships are unrestricted. Several, however, are designated

for particular areas of research, including fellowships for environmental studies,

English literature, art history, Asian Studies, theology, and a young woman in philosophy. The Center also invites applicants from scholars in inter-disciplinary fields, including African American Studies, area studies, Cultural Studies, and Media Studies.

Stipends

The amounts awarded are individually determined, according to the needs of the Fellow and the Center's ability to meet them. The Center seeks to provide at least half salary and covers travel expenses to and from North Carolina for Fellows and dependents.

Facilities and Services

The Center provides a rich environment for individual research and the exchange of ideas. Located in the progressive Triangle region of North Carolina, near Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh, the Center affords access to the rich cultural and intellectual
communities supported by the area's research institutes, universities, and dynamic arts scene. The stunning Archie K. Davis building includes private studies for Fellows, conference rooms, a central commons for dining, lounges, and reading areas.
The Center's unparalleled, comprehensive library service supports Fellows by fulfilling thousands of requests for books and other research materials from out partner institutions in the Triangle, usually within 24 hours, and libraries around the world.
Library staff also provide reference assistance and instruction in new online research tools.

Support

Fellowships are supported by the Center's endowment, private foundation grants, contributions from alumni and friends, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Deadline and Application Procedures

Applicants submit an application form, a curriculum vitae, a 1000-word project proposal, and three letters of recommendation. The application form and instructions may be found at the Center's website: http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org

Applications and letters of recommendation must be submitted online by October 18, 2016.

http://nationalhumanitiescenter.org

email: nhc@nationalhumanitiescenter.org

The National Humanities Center does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, national or ethnic origin, handicap, sexual orientation,or age. We are dedicated to fair treatment, diversity, and inclusion.

SCMS is able to continue its mission because of your support and generosity. Please consider making a contribution to support our ongoing efforts to promote a broad understanding of film, television, and related media through research and
teaching grounded in the contemporary humanities tradition.

                SCMS Members’ Business Meeting: Minutes
Friday, March 27, 2015: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
SCMS Conference, Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, Montreal

I.	Welcome and Introductions: Barb Klinger

SCMS President Klinger welcomed members to the conference, and to Montreal, and thanked the Host Committee and local institutions for their support.

She began by reiterating SCMS policies regarding the Society’s resistance to taking stands on issues that presume to represent all members in matters that are not directly related to the shared concerns of the Society.
Klinger then summarized the recent election results, introducing the newly elected members of the Executive Board, and thanking those who would be outgoing this year for their service. She also encouraged other members to volunteer for service in additional roles, including on the many SCMS committees that rely upon the time and energy of members. She especially thanked those who served on this year’s host committee and conference committee, as well as Caucus and Special Interest Group representatives, for their service to SCMS. All members were also encouraged to consider donating to SCMS, especially to support conference travel and awards funds.

II.	2013 Conference Report: Steven Cohan

After thanking SCMS members and staff crucial to the planning of the conference, Cohan summarized this year’s data, emphasizing that the 2015 conference received a record number of proposals, resulting in a large and diverse program. Noting that the current acceptance rate is around 80% for pre-constituted panels, and 56% for open call proposals, Cohan emphasized that inclusion on pre-constituted panels remains the most likely route for members to have proposals to the conference accepted.

III.	Executive Director’s Report: Jill Simpson

Simpson provided a detailed summary of the various criteria (including geography, ease of travel, and weather, in addition to costs) that determine the selection of conference sites, and emphasized the importance of members booking rooms in the official conference hotel, necessary to our ability to hold cost-effective conferences.
She also clarified that the Executive Board has been closely monitoring and planning for the possibility of pending legislation in Georgia that could impact the 2016 conference already planned for Atlanta. She noted that restrictive and perhaps discriminatory legislation in other states will be an ongoing concern for SCMS when choosing future conference locations, and these will remain closely monitored. (Shortly after the 2015 conference, the impending vote in the Georgia House had been cancelled.)

IV.	Treasurer’s Report: Amanda Ann Klein

Klein summarized the current, healthy fiscal status of SCMS, citing current membership and conference figures (1851 registrants), and total assets ($1.3M). She also noted that SCMS is currently considering new ways to use some of its finances, including possible changes in some of its investments; Klein also noted that the arrival of Executive Director Jill Simpson promises to have a positive impact on SCMS in general and that the Executive Director has begun to work closely with the Treasurer.

V.	Cinema Journal Report: Will Brooker

Cinema Journal editor Brooker noted that his tenure as editor will be ending and a search for his replacement will begin in 2016. After citing basic statistics for the journal, he drew attention to many of the journal’s ongoing features and initiatives, including the “In Focus,” section of the journal and the online Afterthoughts and Postscripts, a visible presence via Facebook, Twitter, as well as expanding and productive links with Aca-Media, TeachingMedia.org, Antenna, and In Media Res. He also noted that the new online journal [in]Transition, overseen by Cinema Journal in collaboration with MediaCommons, was already being recognized this year with an SCMS Award of Distinction.

VI.	Information-Technology Report: Aviva Dove-Viebahn

Dove-Viebahn noted the availability of two mobile apps for the conference (one a test), and encouraged members to respond to the conference survey regarding their use; she also noted that approximately 400 conference abstracts had been digitized as part of another test for future use, and reported that five workshops would be streaming this year, with links to the SCMS Facebook page: these will also be archived. She concluded by offering to help all Scholarly Interest Groups and Caucuses to increase their web presence, and to field any technical questions relevant to SCMS groups and members.

VII.	Fieldnotes Report: Haidee Wasson

Wasson summarized the ongoing progress of the Fieldnotes project, citing the three oral histories (Linda Williams, Janet Staiger, Gertrud Koch) now posted on the SCMS website, and announcing others currently in preparation, including those being currently conducted at the conference. She also encouraged members to offer suggestions of additional names for interviewees and interviewers.

VIII.	Questions from the Audience

Klinger responded to questions from the audience regarding 1) the possibility of future conferences in Europe or other international locations (including Cuba and the Pacific Rim), and 2) the possibility of an SCMS group for administrators to consider (and perhaps defend) changes to the discipline. Klinger emphasized that international conferences pose distinct difficulties, but remain viable and attractive options, and suggested that a workshop for cinema and media studies administrators at the 2016 conference would be a welcome first step towards regular discussion of administrative matters relevant to the discipline within SCMS. Dove-Viebahn noted that the survey material she is gathering (to be released this summer) should be a valuable resource in such discussions.

The meeting ended at 12:15 p.m.

The 2015 SCMS Conference Program Committee welcomes quality paper, panel, and workshop proposals on any topic related to cinema and media studies. The deadline for proposals is Friday, August 29, 2014 (5:00 pm Central Time).

What Makes a Successful Proposal?

A good proposal will clearly and succinctly identify several key elements: 1) the thesis of the argument or research to be presented; 2) the scholarly context of the paper's thesis and/or intervention; how does this thesis forward previous understanding? Why is it important? And 3) the methodology of the research/analysis; how will this paper accomplish its goals? This latter point might entail identifying new evidence or a new methodology. In addition, effective abstracts are well written, present a synthesized version of the paper-to-be-presented and conform to the length requirement of the proposal system. Abstracts should be articulated to the format in which the research will be presented (individual paper, workshop, pre-constituted panel). If you are unfamiliar with writing a conference paper proposal, we suggest that you show your abstract to an experienced colleague for editorial suggestions and guidance.

SCMS Proposal Submission Tips

Tip #1:

Read the guidelines and instructions in the proposal system and know these rules:

Everyone must be a registered website user either as a temporary member (good for web access for 30 days) or as a regular (paid) member.

The system searches the website database by last name. If you are submitting a panel or workshop proposal and have a presenter who is not in the database, you can create a temporary member record for the presenter. You will need to enter the individual's name, institutional affiliation, and mailing and e-mail addresses. You will also need to create a username and password for him/her. Be sure that you inform the presenter of his/her username and password AND of the SCMS membership and conference registration requirements.

Only one proposal submission per person.

Only one paper presentation per person.

Participation is restricted to two, different activities. Chairing and presenting are two different things. Presenting on a workshop and presenting a paper are also considered to be two different activities.

Panel proposals should have a chair and four presenters or a chair, three presenters, and a respondent. In each case, the chair can be a presenter on the panel.

Workshop proposals should have at least four, but no more than five presenters (including the chair).

Membership in the Society is required to present at the annual conference. Requests for waivers of the membership and/or conference registration fees may be granted in exceptional circumstances for artists or renowned scholars from other disciplines or filmmakers whose contributions are essential to the panel or workshop topic. Waiver requests must be submitted with the proposal by August 29, 2014 (5:00 pm Central Time). Note: waivers cannot be granted to the same individual in two consecutive years.

Tip #2: Develop and save the text of the proposal as a document in advance rather than typing it directly into the form.

Open call paper proposals need: 1) a title, 2) a summary no longer than 2500 characters including spaces and hard returns, 3) 3-5 bibliographic sources, and 4) an author bio no longer than 500 characters. If prepared in advance, paper proposals can be submitted in one visit to the proposal system. Paper proposals that are part of a panel proposal should not be submitted to the open call. They should be sent to the panel chair/organizer to be submitted as part of the panel proposal.

Panel proposals need: 1) a title, 2) a summary no longer than 2500 characters including spaces and hard returns, 3) 3-5 bibliographic sources, 4) a chair bio no longer than 500 characters PLUS the titles, summaries, bibliographic sources, and bios for each author. Text can be entered and saved in multiple visits to the system if you are waiting to receive the presenters' paper summaries, bibliographic sources, and bios. The papers can be added one at a time and saved. After the third paper has been added, the submit button will activate and you can submit if the panel is complete.

Workshop proposals need 1) a title, 2) a summary no longer than 2500 characters including space and hard returns, 3) 3-5 bibliographic sources, 4) bios no longer than 500 characters per bio for each presenter. The summary should explain why the topic is suited to a workshop format and how you will involve the audience.

Tip #3: How to Decide What Type of Proposal to Submit

There are a few key differences to keep in mind when deciding whether to propose an open call paper, a pre-constituted panel, or a workshop.

A pre-constituted panel encourages a high degree of specificity that the organization of open call papers into panels by the Program Committee does not necessarily seek to achieve.

Open call paper proposals allow the Program Committee, when arranging sets of papers into sessions, to do so in a way that tries purposely to foster conversation between and convergence of different media, genres, and national or regional cinemas.

By comparison and by definition, pre-constituted panels allow for a tighter focus, often concentrating their topic on a particular genre, medium, and national or regional identity. If you want your paper to be included in a tightly focused panel, you should make use of the Bulletin Board to organize a panel or to see if your work already fits in possible panel topics soliciting papers. Pre-constituted panels, it should also be noted, historically have a slightly higher acceptance rate.

Workshops are distinct from panels in that they focus on field-specific topics with brief presentations by presenters that lead to focused substantive discussion and debate among workshop participants and the audience. Workshops are intended to be dialogical, interactive, and productive work spaces. Topics are typically focused on pedagogy, research strategies, and methodologies. They may also explore major intellectual issues/trends in the discipline. Workshop proposals should describe how your topic is best suited to the workshop format and how you plan to involve the audience.

Tip #4: Save your proposal often if you are not submitting the entire proposal at one time or if you have frequent interruptions.

After you log in, the proposal system pages and forms will time out after two hours. Open call paper and workshop proposals should not require much time to cut and paste the text into the form and then submit. Panel proposals may require more time to gather and enter all of the information. After entering the third paper of a panel proposal, the submit button will activate. If the proposal is complete, save it and proof before submitting. If the panel will have four papers, save the proposal after entering the fourth paper and then do the final proof before submitting.

Tip #5: Proof the proposal carefully before submitting.

You cannot make changes or corrections after it has been submitted.

If you need minor corrections or edits, email them to the SCMS Office.

Tip #6: Submit early.

Submitting your proposal before the end of August allows you time to contact the SCMS Office (office@cmstudies.org) with submission questions and ensures that your proposal has been submitted well before the deadline. If your hard drive dies or you experience a power outage or other unforeseen events, you will still have time to submit before the deadline.

Call for Proposals to Host the SCMS Undergraduate Conference The annual SCMS Undergraduate Conference was inaugurated in Spring 2013 at the University of Notre Dame. This conference aims to provide undergraduate students with a forum to exchange ideas, meet their peers, and discover a range of approaches to film and media studies beyond their home institution. The conference introduces students to professional academic behavior and familiarizes them with the Society.

The annual SCMS Undergraduate Conference will be held at different host institutions each year, with the possibility that host schools will repeat on a four- or five-year cycle. The host of the SCMS Undergraduate Conference can garner attention for their film or media studies program, showcase work by their students, and introduce their students to different ways of thinking about film and media, as well as introduce them to peers from across North America.

In Spring 2014, the SCMS Undergraduate Conference will be held at the University of Oklahoma, and Smith College will host in Spring 2015. We are seeking proposals to host the SCMS Undergraduate Conference in 2016 and 2017. To achieve regional balance, we would be especially eager to have proposals from the West and Canada, but we will entertain proposals from any area of North America. In future years, we will aim to rotate the conference among hosts from different regions.

The conference is a two-day event, with roughly 30 papers. Students are not asked to pay registration fees, and meals are provided. SCMS will provide up to $2000 seed funding with the understanding that the host program will seek matching funds from their own colleges or universities. Hosts will be provided with templates for a budget and calls for papers, as well as sample programs and a timeline for running the conference. Proposals should include information about how the host will fund the event, what accommodations are available to students, information about ease and costs of travel to the host site, information about site facilities, and faculty involvement.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please contact Pam Wojcik (Pamela.wojcik.5@nd.edu) or Victoria Sturtevant (vsturtevant@ou.edu) to learn more.
SCMS 2014 Conference Survey We hope you enjoyed your time at the 2014 Seattle Conference. We would appreciate your feedback, as we are already thinking towards next year's 2015 Montreal Conference. Please take a few moments to answer the following questions. 2014 Conference Survey

Complete the survey by 5pm on May 16, 2014, and you will be entered into drawings for a free membership renewal for the 2014-2015 membership year and a Montreal conference registration waiver!

Note: To submit the survey, you will need to answer every question, but please feel free to type in N/A for questions you do not wish to answer. While including your contact information with the survey submission is optional, you must include your contact information if you would like to be entered into the drawing.

SCMS Members' Business Meeting: Minutes Friday, March 21, 2014: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Cirrus Room, Seattle Sheraton Hotel

I. Introduction: Barb Klinger

SCMS President Barb Klinger (Indiana University) welcomed members and briefly summarized the order of the meeting.
II. Thanks: Barb Klinger

Klinger introduced present officers and board members before thanking outgoing board members Jim Castonguay, Angelo Restivo, and Pam Wojcik. She also announced that Amanda Klein has been elected Treasurer, and that Mary Beltran and Mary Desjardins will join the board. Finally, Klinger thanked members who ran for office, and those who served on conference, standing, annual, and awards committees, as well as caucus, Special Interest Group, and graduate student representatives.
III. Call for Service: Barb KlingerKlinger reminded and encouraged all members to consider volunteering for SCMS service roles. She also encouraged members to donate to SCMS to help fund awards and travel grants, and to encourage their institutions to join as well.IV. Next Year's Conference: Barb KlingerKlinger announced that the 2015 SCMS conference will be held at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, in Montreal.V. Presentations: VariousAngelo Restivo (Georgia State University: Board Member and Conference Program Committee Chair) reported on this year's conference statistics, emphasizing a record number of submissions (913 open call papers, 346 preconstituted panels, and 76 workshops) and acceptance rates of 68% for preconstituted panels and 51% for workshops. He also noted trends in submissions, including a rising number of submissions on international cinema and new media.

Steven Cohan (Syracuse University: President-Elect and Chair of Task Force for Executive Director) reported on the progress of the search for an Executive Director, summarizing a timeline designed to see the position filled by September 2014. He encouraged the ongoing submission of applications for qualified applicants.
Jim Castonguay (Sacred Heart University: Treasurer), employing a detailed handout, reported the solid fiscal status of SCMS, and offered membership and conference attendance figures; he also emphasized how the hiring of an Executive Director, now possible within the SCMS budget, should allow for significant redefinition of the functions of the Executive members of the SCMS board. Will Brooker(Kingston University: Editor of Cinema Journal) reported on both the ongoing status of Cinema Journal as well as the many exciting multi-media initiatives he and his colleagues have undertaken, including: Afterthought and Postscripts, In Media Res tie-ins with In Focus, ACA Podcasts, and the launch of In Transition, a peer-reviewed academic journal of video essays in collaboration with Media Commons. Brooker also encouraged members to continue to submit their best scholarship to Cinema Journal.

Aviva Dove-Viebahn (Arizona State University: SCMS Web Content Manager) reported on recent developments on the SCMS website, including restored member access to Cinema Journal through Project Muse and the compilation of information on film and media studies programs in the United States: she also drew attention to the ongoing media activity (tweeting, live streaming, video interviews, etc.) taking place at the conference.

Victoria Sturtevant (Oklahoma University: Ex-officio Board Member) reported on upcoming SCMS Undergraduate Conference in Norman, Oklahoma, and announced that the 2015 conference will take place at Smith College: she also welcomed volunteers interested in hosting future conferences, especially in the Western United States in 2016.

Haidee Wasson (Concordia University: SCMS Board Member) reported on the launch and future goals of the Fieldnotes oral history project, which will include a group of interviews with four key figures being conducted at this year's conference: Charles Acland will interview Janet Staiger, Patrice Petro will interview Thomas Elsaesser, Thomas Waugh will interview Linda Williams, and Robin Curtis will interview Gertrud Koch.

SCMS members Michael Renov (University of Southern California) and Scott MacDonald (Syracuse University/Harvard University) updated members on the ongoing initiative to help support the experimental film distributor Canyon Cinema, encouraging members to ask their home institutions to make a commitment to financially supporting Canyon. They also discussed the goal of redefining Canyon Cinema as a nonprofit company.VI. Member Comments and QuestionsBrief questions were addressed to Renov and MacDonald regarding additional forms of support for Canyon Cinema: they emphasized that any form of support is welcome, but that the current goal is to secure larger donations. A member also asked Jim Castonguay what SCMS funded from its basic assets. He and Barb Klinger explained that SCMS funds go toward paying staff and supporting the awards, SIGs and Caucuses, Conference Events, and many other SCMS activities, including the new Undergraduate Conference. In addition, the investment in an Executive Director, which is crucial to SCMS, will be an ongoing substantial expense.
VII. Closing: Barb Klinger

SCMS President Klinger again thanked everyone for attending, and encouraged everyone to also attend the Awards Ceremony and Reception that evening: she wished everyone an enjoyable conference experience.

What Makes a Successful Proposal?

A good proposal will clearly and succinctly identify several key elements: 1) the thesis of the argument or research to be presented; 2) the scholarly
context of the paper's thesis and/or intervention; how does this thesis forward previous understanding? Why is it important? And 3) the methodology of the research/analysis; how will this paper accomplish its goals? This latter
point might entail identifying new evidence or a new methodology. In addition, effective abstracts are well written, present a synthesized version of the paper-to-be-presented and conform to the length requirement of the proposal
system. Abstracts should be articulated to the format in which the research will be presented (individual paper, workshop, pre-constituted panel). If you are unfamiliar with writing a conference paper proposal, we suggest that
you show your abstract to an experienced colleague for editorial suggestions and guidance.

Proposal Submission Tips

Tip #1: Read the guidelines and instructions in the proposal system and know these rules:

Everyone must be a registered website user either as a temporary member (good for web access for 30 days) or as a regular (paid) member.

The system searches the website database by last name. If you are submitting a panel or workshop proposal and have a presenter who is not in the database, you can create a temporary member record for the presenter. You will need to
enter the individual’s name, institutional affiliation, and mailing and e-mail addresses. You will also need to create a username and password for him/her. Be sure that you inform the presenter of his/her username and password
AND of the SCMS membership and conference registration requirements.

Requests for waivers of the membership and/or conference registration fees may be granted in exceptional circumstances for artists or renowned scholars from other disciplines or filmmakers whose contributions are essential to the panel
or workshop topic. Waiver requests must be submitted with the proposal by August 30, 2013 (5:00 pm Central Time).

Tip #2: Develop and save the text of the proposal as a document in advance rather than typing it directly into the form.

Open call paper proposals need: 1) a title, 2) a summary no longer than 2500 characters including spaces and hard returns, 3) 3-5 bibliographic sources, and 4) an author bio no longer than 500
characters. If prepared in advance, paper proposals can be submitted in one visit to the proposal system. Paper proposals that are part of a panel proposal should not be submitted to the open call. They should be sent to the panel
chair/organizer to be submitted as part of the panel proposal.

Panel proposals need: 1) a title, 2) a summary no longer than 2500 characters including spaces and hard returns, 3) 3-5 bibliographic sources, 4) a chair bio no longer than 500 characters PLUS
the titles, summaries, bibliographic sources, and bios for each author. Text can be entered and saved in multiple visits to the system if you are waiting to receive the presenters’ paper summaries, bibliographic sources, and bios.
The papers can be added one at a time and saved. After the third paper has been added, the submit button will activate and you can submit if the panel is complete.

Workshop proposals need 1) a title, 2) a summary no longer than 2500 characters including space and hard returns, 3) 3-5 bibliographic sources, 4) bios no longer than 500 characters per bio for
each presenter. The summary should explain why the topic is suited to a workshop format and how you will involve the audience.

Tip #3: Know the difference between a Workshop and a Panel.

Workshops are distinct from panels in that they focus on field-specific topics with brief presentations by panelists that lead to focused and substantive discussion and debate among workshop participants and others attending the event.
Workshops are intended to be dialogical and productive workspaces. Topics are typically focused on pedagogy, research strategies and methodologies. They may also explore major intellectual issues/trends in the discipline. Workshops
should have at least 4 but no more than 5 participants (including the chair) with individual presentations of no more than 5-7 minutes. As you are formulating your proposal, please make sure to clarify why your topic is best suited
to the workshop format rather than the typical panel format. In addition, please describe the strategy that you will use to ensure full engagement with the workshop model and to achieve dynamic audience involvement.

Tip #4: Save your proposal often if you are not submitting the entire proposal at one time or if you have frequent interruptions.

After you log in, the proposal system pages and forms will time out after two hours. Open call paper and workshop proposals should not require much time to cut and paste the text into the form and then submit. Panel proposals may require
more time to gather and enter all of the information. After entering the third paper of a panel proposal, the submit button will activate. If the proposal is complete, save it and proof before submitting. If the panel will have
four papers, save the proposal after entering the fourth paper and then do the final proof before submitting.

If your hard
drive dies or you experience a power outage or other unforeseen events, you will still have time to submit before the deadline.

We look forward to receiving your submissions for the 2014 SCMS Conference!
